Week 1 – Icebreakers / Music Introduction – Audition Prep
Essential to any after school program is the building of a rapport between the students and the instructors. During the first session, students will participate in theatre warm-up exercises and games and learn some of the music from the show to prepare for the audition process. In addition, the students learn the storyline of the musicals and have a chance to practice with the musical director and choreographer.

Week 2 – Auditions
The audition process for young students gives each student the chance to sing with their cast mates in a fun, pressure-free environment. Even professional performers sometimes fear auditions. Our audition process, geared to young children, is a series of games and songs in a group setting which encourages the development of a sense of teamwork and confidence.

Week 3 – Casting / Rehearsal
We now start the rehearsal process. Students are assigned a part based on their audition. Students are given a script with their lines highlighted for them in advance to assist them in the learning process.

Weeks 4 – 8  - Rehearsal
Over the next five weeks, the students put the show together under the guidance of our team of musical theatre professionals. Students are always learning during our rehearsals. While some students may have larger roles, all students are constantly learning new games and exercises, which help develop confidence, communication, co-ordination and memory skills. Our rehearsals are not based on a “You stand here, you walk there…” method. Rather, students learn elementary character and scene study skills that help them understand the traits of their characters. By the end of Week 8, all students know their songs and dances and are ready, if not itching, to run the show.

Week 9 – The 1st Run-Through
By this time, the students are ready to run the show in rehearsal from start to finish. Doing complete runs of the show gives the students a sense of accomplishment that continues to build excitement leading up to opening night.

Week 10 – Dress Rehearsals
Our final session is a full dress rehearsal in costume. Students are given the opportunity to run the show, hear notes on the show and run the show a second time. In this process, the students continue to build self-assurance and excitement. There is always an improvement in this two-step rehearsal process. The students leave this session brimming with confidence and enthusiasm.

Technical Rehearsal / Performance Nights
Moving into the theatre is always an exciting time for a performer. Now in costume and under the lights. The students are ready to hit the stage. On the first show night, students will have a full technical run through to get used to the larger space, the lights and the technical equipment. After a full dress rehearsal, the students have a dinner break and then have their first of two performances.

Chicken Coop Theatre Staff
Chicken Coop is made up of a staff that specializes in children’s productions. We always ensure that a full compliment of our team is present for every rehearsal to ensure the students receive a well-rounded program.
